Winter at Pinewall is the best decision we made this year. The great-room fire, the spa, and the small library kept us happily indoors for four days. The deodar walks too — but those required actually leaving.
A lodge built around a fire.
Pinewall was built in 2017 on a stretch of land just above Old Manali — twenty-two rooms folded into the deodar forest, with a great room large enough for a single, long-burning hearth. The brief was simple: a mountain house quiet enough to write in, and warm enough to wait out the snow.
Mornings begin slowly here. Coffee in the library, breakfast at your own pace, and the option of doing nothing more strenuous than walking to the river. Afternoons are for the spa or the apple orchard. Evenings, the fire is what the lodge gathers around.
"The mountain decides the day, not us. We've built the lodge around that idea."
